Construction Begins on Florence Tram Line 4.1

CMB is moving forward with the project that will deliver the new T4.1 Leopolda–Le Piagge tram line

, a strategic infrastructure investment that will support the development of sustainable mobility in the western area of Florence. Approximately 6.4 km long and featuring 13 stops, the new line will connect Porta al Prato–Leopolda with the Piagge district, representing the first section of the future extension to Campi Bisenzio.
A key milestone towards the start of construction was reached on 17 July, when the Florence City Council approved the launch of Phase 0—the preliminary stage dedicated to organising and preparing the construction logistics areas, an essential step to ensure the efficient and safe execution of the works.

The following day, the project was officially presented during a press conference at Palazzo Vecchio, attended by Florence Mayor Sara Funaro, Tuscany Regional President Eugenio Giani and Councillor for Mobility Andrea Giorgio, who outlined the project’s features, implementation schedule and expected benefits for the local community.
On 20 July, the activities planned under Phase 0 officially began, marking the project’s operational start. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the future base camp on Via Piemonte, one of the five construction and logistics areas identified to support the works. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Sara Funaro, President Eugenio Giani and Councillor Andrea Giorgio, highlighting the strong institutional support for this strategic project.

The first activities of Phase 0 include setting up the operational areas, base camps and storage sites for excavation materials, as well as resolving conflicts with the underground utility networks along the route of the future tram line. For this initial phase, CMB has chosen to deploy a significant number of its own direct workforce, reflecting the Cooperative’s determination to deliver a project of major infrastructural and social importance for the city of Florence.
