Santa Chiara Hospital in Cisanello Pisa

CISANELLO (PI)
ITALY

In Pisa, Healthcare gains space

With fourteen operating theatres and numerous state-of-the-art departments,

the innovative Santa Chiara Hospital in Cisanello in Pisa is about to become one of the most advanced healthcare hubs in Europe.

The concept has been redesigned with the aim of prioritising and focusing on the patient, with a model that ensures maximum flexibility and integration of professionals, disciplines and beds. The contract calls for the completion of buildings for healthcare and educational use, followed by a nine-year period of management and maintenance of the new buildings and existing hospital structures.

POST-COVID HEALTHCARE
The new facilities are a response to the challenges presented by the pandemic, which required the creation of highly adaptable, isolated rooms and intensive care beds.

Technical Description

The project adopts a horizontal single-block hospital model, placing critical areas, operating theatres and intensive therapy units all on one floor. This ensures that patients receive a consistent and high level of care in buildings located next to each other. A walkway will connect the single-block section to a second newly constructed section that will house the wards and operating block. The project also includes the creation of large parking areas next to the new buildings. Throughout the various phases of construction, the e-chiaracresce.it website will showcase how the entire building site evolves, highlighting the constant movement of trucks and vehicles, the continuous work of the construction crew, and the numerous tall cranes symbolising change.

The power station: the beating heart

The power station is not only the beating heart of the complex, but also ensures safety. In the event that ENEL’s power fails and the cogenerators are unable to generate electricity, critical loads of the Technological Centre will receive power from backup generators. The management system will be able to shut down or separate non-critical loads to ensure continued operation of essential services such as fire protection, water supply and medical gas supply.

“My place is here on the site, where we are building a facility dedicated to caring for and respecting people.”

The demolition of a building will pave the way for the creation of a “Historical Park” on the site of the old Cisanello sanatorium, while a “River Park” will be established in the floodplain area near the sports fields. The green and tree-lined areas will be extended to enhance the aesthetics and mitigate the impact of the hospital complex.

A new mobility

Once fully operational, the new hospital will be able to handle a daily influx of approximately 15,000 people, including patients, visitors, employees, students, teachers, and suppliers. Inside the facility, electric vehicles will predominately circulate, while outside, a large multi-level parking area will be constructed.
