Santa Marta Hall of Residence

VENICE
ITALY

The hall of residence is situated in the former nineteenth century cotton mill

Providing accommodation for students means making room for the future, focusing on technology and energy saving.

At Venice CMB is engaged in the development of the largest hall of residence in the city, which will double the accommodation devoted to social housing for university students.

The redevelopment of the area of 8 thousand square metres, where there was cotton mill in the 1800s, has involved work on protected historical buildings and special care during the excavation work. The work on the Santa Marta hall of residence strengthens CMB’s experience with Italian universities.

Technical Description

The Santa Marta Hall of Residence, developed for the Ca’ Foscari University, is composed of three historic buildings – the “Cube”, the “Parallelepiped” and the South Building – which together will accommodate 650 students. The accommodation structure will be supported by a series of facilities and shared areas with prestigious finishings. The rooms, double and single, will be furnished with every comfort, including a study corner and kitchen. The supply of renewable energy will be guaranteed by a photovoltaic system and by 12 solar thermal panels.

“This hall of residence is an historically important contribution, not only because it doubles the available student accommodation, but also because it regenerates an area of Venice”.

Building Site Manager for the Santa Marta Hall of Residence

Timeline

31 May 2018

Opening

The new Santa Marta hall of residence in Venice was inaugurated last December 9th, in the presence of INPS Chairman Pasquale Tridico, Fabrica SGR CEO Giovanni Maria Benucci and CMB Chairman Carlo Zini, as well as the Dean Prof. Michele Bugliesi together with the local authorities. The initiative, with a value of about 30 million euros, was carried out by the “Fondo Erasmo”, a real estate fund dedicated to temporary housing for students, managed by Fabrica Immobiliare SGR and built by CMB in about two years.

April 2018

Delivery of the Parallelepiped

Work on the Parallelepiped, the renovated historic structure with accommodation for 136 students’ places, is finished in record time on 30 April 2018. On completion, with 650 beds, the structure will double the offer of accommodation for university students in Venice, contributing significantly to fill the current gap that separates supply and demand for housing solutions with a controlled fee.

March 2018

Work starts

The redevelopment work of the area begins in March with archaeological support. The remains of a palisade with a cane base used for reclaiming water in the Middle Ages come to light during the excavations. At the same time, passages are created for the supply of goods to the building site.

February 2017

Signing the contract

The contract between the client, Fabrica SGR, and CMB was signed on 20 February. The project is by the Venice Design Consortium.
