New Navile Campus: the University grows still further
A new large university complex for the University of Bologna which aims for urban regeneration.
CMB has developed the new site of the Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biotechnologies, Physics and Astronomy faculties of the University of Bologna in the Navile district, where there were two important furnaces of the Galotti company for the production of bricks between the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s. The Navile Campus, situated on two areas right and left of the Navile canal, is one of Europe’s most important scientific-technological centres, able to accommodate around 5,500 people, including lecturers, researchers and students. CMB, which has already developed the university structures, in this way strengthens its experience of collaborating with Italian universities.7

Technical Description
The Navile Campus, developed for Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, is composed of seven building units that will house lecture rooms, teaching and chemistry laboratories, offices, libraries and areas for facilities.
The envelope of the buildings is made with ventilated facades in aluminium and coverings in slabs of terracotta and Kalzip. The roof covering of the buildings and a part of the basement have been used for the installation of machines for the aeration of the rooms and for the expulsion of air by the numerous chemistry laboratory fume hoods.
The complex has been carefully constructed with attention towards the environment and sustainability and includes extensive green areas covering 33,157 sq.m.
“Developing a structure that regenerates an urban area and which is able, at the same time, to offer appropriate spaces for students, is a source of great satisfaction: it means looking to the future, creating new opportunities.”

Timeline

December 2016
The second delivery
On 23 December 2016 work was completed on another two buildings – UE2 and UE3 – of the university complex. The development of the UE2 building, the former Galotti furnace, included the restoration of the two Hoffmann kilns, which constitute the basement, and reusing the old dryer that lies above the part housing the kilns. A consultation room has been developed on the ground floor, and a cafeteria on the first floor. The UE3 building houses, instead, the astronomical observatory composed of five floors with an adjoining library and spaces for the students.
September 2016
The first delivery
On 28 September 2015 CMB delivers the first of the seven building under construction, unit UE1, developed in the area left of the Navile canal. The building houses lecture rooms used by all departments.

April 2016
The works are assigned to CMB for RTI COCEBO – Guerrato Impianti
After the liquidation, due to the economic crisis, of the group of companies that had started the works for the new Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmacy and Biotechnologies, Physics and Astronomy faculties of the University of Bologna, in April 2016 CMB took over as agent of the Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Imprese (RTI) (Temporary Grouping of Companies) COCEBO – Guerrato Impianti
